WATSONVILLE — Rolling Hills Middle School students are displaying artwork at their school that was inspired by the famous Russian artist Wassily Kandinky.

Art instructor Jessica Bender said the exhibit, at the campus library, is the result of an assignment she created.

“The lesson involved discussing and writing about how much of the movement and color in Kandinsky’s work was inspired by music,” Bender said. “Kandinsky, like many artists, experienced synethesia — when numbers, sounds, et cetera, are involuntarily associated with color and shape. Seventh and eighth grade students took that idea, studied slides of Kandinsky’s work, and created their own abstract oil pastel works on paper while listening to music of their choice as inspiration for colors, forms, movement, balance and lines.”

About 150 student artists produced work for the assignment. Several of them have been featured in the PVUSD District Art Show and have had work hung in the courthouse lobby in Watsonville.

“We at Rolling Hills are very proud of our students’ accomplishments in art and we see a lot of talent and genuine promise in our students,” Bender said.

One student, Maria Garcia, wrote an essay, stating that “Kandinsky translated songs into colors. My painting uses his style because it has a lot of bright colors, only abstract shapes and it was inspired by the song, ‘Take Care’ by Drake and Rihanna.”
