WATSONVILLE — The members of the Watsonville High School Dance Club are rehearsing their moves for the upcoming annual Cultura Caliente WHS Dance Club scholarship benefit on March 22.

The performance will be the 10th anniversary for the show, which brings to the stage myriad dances from folklorico to flamenco, from tango to tap.

The WHS team’s performance will feature Salsa Rueda, in which multiple couples dance in a circle and frequently switch partners. Often, a “caller” calls out moves at random, which the participants follow.

“It’s more of a social dance,” said dance instructor Keith Cowans. “It’s all about fun — just enjoying the music.”

Cowans said the dance’s universal moves makes it easy for aficionados to get their groove on wherever they go.

A 2010 WHS graduate, Cowans is studying dance at Cabrillo College, where he is rehearsing for a performance in the Spring Dance Concert.
