Before former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor left the stage after a talk at the Henry J. Mello Center Friday, she had one last bit of advice for the students.

“Now listen,” she said. “Study hard. That’s a court order.”

O’Connor, who shared the stage with Congressman Sam Farr, D-Carmel, was at the Mello Center for a discussion of government, the importance of civic participation and of her own experience as the first female Supreme Court justice.

Her visit was punctuated when she performed the oath of office for the Watsonville Youth City Council, and then shook each of the council members’ hands.

“I thought it was really amazing getting to meet her,” said Youth City Councilman Jeffrey Garcia, 15. “I was really surprised to hear that she was going to be here.”

The event was attended by the top students from eighth through 12th grade government and social studies classes from around Pajaro Valley Unified School District, as well as local college students.
