WATSONVILLE — Collin Travers stepped out of the driver’s seat of a Watsonville Police cruiser Wednesday evening and slowly approached a driver suspected of a traffic infraction.

After quickly screening the vehicle for dangerous items, Travers asked the driver for his license, registration and proof of insurance, and walked back to the car to relay the information to dispatchers. Then, he wrote out a citation.

Later that night he would assist with searching and handcuffing other suspects.

Such scenarios are a routine matters for police officers, but Travers is a 15-year-old Harbor High School sophomore, and he was doing the simulations as a member of the Watsonville Police Cadet Program.

“Ever since I was 5 I wanted to be a police officer,” he said. “I’m a big people person, and I wanted to make a difference in my community and do what I can to get drugs and gangs off the streets.”
