WATSONVILLE While in a sea of nearly 50 kids, Watsonville residents Steven Withrow and Rebecca Tait stood out in the crowd.

Probably because they were likely the only adults participating in the city of Watsonville's annual egg drop competition Thursday.

"I figured, hey, not too many adults get into egg dropping," Withrow said. "I hope the kids beat me. I'm here just for fun."

Whether or not Withrow's egg drop was successful was not immediately known. As his parachuted contraption holding the eggs floated down the Civic Plaza building, a gust of wind blew it off course, landing on an overhang about three-quarters the way down on the building, where it stayed out of reach for the duration of the competition.

"That's mine!" he exclaimed to the cheering crowd.

Tait's egg drop fared better. Using a balloon as a parachute, the container slowly floated down, leaving the eggs inside without a crack.

It was a happy ending to a situation that could have been bad: Before the competition, the balloon sprung a small leak, slowly deflating the one thing that would protect the eggs from the impact.

The annual egg drop, held in the alley between the Civic Plaza building and post office, is put on to honor Engineers' Week, a national celebration that highlights engineers and the skills needed for the field.
