APTOS — Valley Christian High’s sister combination ended up being the undoing of the Aptos High girls soccer team.
And for a fifth consecutive season, the Mariners’ Central Coast Section tournament hopes faded after one game.
Nicole Carson scored on a pass from sister Colby Carson for the only goal of the game as Valley Christian defeated Aptos 1-0 in the first round of the CCS Division II tournament.
“They connect well,” said Valley Christian coach Jolene Fugate. “Their keeper made some great saves. We had our moments.”
The sisters hooked up in the 30th minute as Nicole Carson went low with her shot to the approval of the Valley Christian faithful that made the trip down traffic-filled Highway 1 to Aptos.
It’s the first loss for the Mariners in the calendar year. They hadn’t lost since Dec. 18 at Depot Park. Since then, they had surrendered just four goals in 11 games.
Carson’s goal was the fifth since the Mariners’ last loss.
