SALINAS – Dreams of competing in the Central Coast Section wrestling tournament have come true for several local wrestlers.
Four Monterey Bay League wrestlers won a wrestle-off on Tuesday at Palma High to earn a spot in the CCS tournament, scheduled for this weekend.
Unlike last year, competitors in the elimination event had to wait 48 hours before competing.
Watsonville’s Alex Mosqueda defeated Monte Vista Christian’s Aaron Young 7-1 in their match. The freshman Wildcat earned the final MBL spot in the 172-pound division and will be the second Watsonville representative in the tournament, joining David Ceja, who took third place in his division on Saturday.
Pajaro Valley’s Cesar Chavez overcame a second-round reversal by Hollister’s Julian Perez and rolled to a 12-2 win. It’ll be Chavez’s first trip to the CCS tournament, as he’ll be placed in the 140-pound division.
North Monterey County’s Tony Perez defeated Pajaro Valley’s Ismael Perez in their wrestle-off, getting a technical fall victory 17-0. Three near falls in the third round sealed up the win.
North Monterey County’s Armando Aguayo got a pin over Salinas’ Martin Alvarez at the 1:23 mark of the second round to advance to CCS. Aguayo was already leading 7-0 when he set down Alvarez’s shoulders on the mat.
