WATSONVILLE — A fire broke out in a wood chimney housing Monday afternoon on the 100 block of Montebello Drive. Watsonville Fire Department responded to the 3:04 p.m. incident and the first arriving engines were met with a wide wall of smoke.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. All residents in the apartment complex on the 100 block of Montebello Drive were evacuated.

According to Watsonville Battalion Chief Pablo Barreto, the fire started in the housing of the fireplace box, causing damage to the area outside the fireplace.

Sefla Joseph, a major artist in the county, rushed to haul several of her paintings from her home as smoke wafted from the door.

“I hope they don’t have to use water indoors,” she said. “I just put in new carpets.”

Since Joseph is one of the key artists in the upcoming annual art show, Figurative Affair, at the R. Blizter Gallery in Santa Cruz, she took special efforts to move several of her oil paintings, which are destined for that March 1 exhibit, to safety.
