SANTA CRUZ — A woman was raped and beaten in a wooded area of the UC Santa Cruz campus Saturday afternoon, the university’s police department reported.
The 21-year-old woman, who is not a UCSC student, was walking alone on a path between the upper quarry amphitheater and the classroom unit buildings approximately 12:20 p.m. when she was sexually assaulted and beaten by a suspect she did not know.
UCSC students describe the area as dark, quiet and, on a weekend, likely deserted.
UC Santa Cruz spokesman Jim Burns said the victim was “severely assaulted” during the attack.
Immediately after the attack a suspect description was sent to surrounding police agencies, warning them to be on the lookout for the suspect.
Additionally, all students, staff and faculty received emails and text messages informing them of the attack.
Burns said that extra patrols were on campus Monday, but that police had no leads.
With more than 16,000 students on the 2,000-acre campus, Burns said reports of sexual assault are not unknown.
“The unusual thing here is that the victim did not know her assailant,” he said.
“We have no reason to believe the suspect has any affiliation with the campus,” Burns added.
Burns said the victim was expected to be released from the hospital Monday and would work with a police sketch artist to produce an image of the suspect.
The suspect is described as a white male adult, 30 to 40 years of age, pale colored skin with a round-shaped face. He is approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs about 200 lbs. He has a muscular, stocky build. He has dark black, medium length hair, green eyes, and a full, dark black mustache and goatee.
He was wearing a dark blue T-shirt with writing on the front, dark blue Levi-type jeans, and a black belt with a silver-colored buckle.
He also wore Oakley-style sunglasses on his head. He has a tattoo of unknown design on the upper right shoulder-bicep area, which was covered mostly by his shirt sleeve. He spoke with a deep growl, and smelled of cigarettes.
The victim did not appear to be armed with a weapon during the attack.
After the assault, he fled on foot toward Steinhart Way, in the area between Quarry Plaza and McHenry Library.
