SANTA CRUZ — More than 70 chefs will light up their stoves and prepare their best bowls of clam chowder when the 32nd annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off and Festival heats up the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on Saturday.

Local restaurants hoping to bring home the gold include Ideal Bar and Grill, Rocky’s Café, Parish Publick House, Severino’s Bar and Grill, Rosie McCann’s, South Beach Pizza, East Side Eatery and MacKenzie Bar and Grill.

In addition to local competitors, out-of-town competitors will arrive from as far as Los Angeles, Fresno and Sacramento.

Teams compete in two divisions: individual and professional. Each team will create their own chowder in one or both of the Manhattan and Boston styles.

They will also be in the running for "Most Original Team," "Most Tasted Chowder" and "People's Choice" awards.

The People's Choice winner and one division champion will receive round trip airline tickets. Awards also include $1,600 in cash prizes.

The cook-off is a chance to display the talents of the chefs at Severino's, said Miguel Perez, a cook at the restaurant who will be participating.
