Police evidence and property techs meet in Watsonville

WATSONVILLE Every day, employees at Watsonville Police Department, and at departments around the state, receive numerous pieces of property and evidence, all of which has strict rules about how it must be dealt with.

They might take in a stolen bicycle that has been recovered, a gun taken from an arrested suspect, a bag of illegal drugs or DNA evidence from a felony suspect.

Each of these have their own protocol for how they must be processed and stored, as well as guidelines for how long they must be kept.

Dozens of evidence and property specialists from the northern California chapter of California Association of Property and Evidence gathered Thursday in the community room on the top floor Watsonville Civic Plaza Building to discuss those issues and share their own experiences.
