WATSONVILLE — To celebrate Engineers' Week, the city of Watsonville will host the 11th annual Egg Drop Contest Thursday.

The contest, open to all, will see participants dropping eggs off the very top of the Civic Plaza parking garage. The goal is to create a container for the eggs that prevents them from smashing after slamming into the concrete.

"It will be an 'egg-cellent'" time," quipped Murray Fontes, principal engineer for the city.

Contestants can register their containers starting at 4 p.m. in the alley between the Civic Plaza at 275 Main St. and the post office. Launching begins at 4:30 p.m.

The container can be of any design, but must be able to pass through a 14-inch hoop. In addition, containers made of wood or containing liquids or styrofoam packing "peanuts" or prohibited.

In the past, participants in the contest included city staff, Watsonville High School students from the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement) Club, children from the city’s Science Workshop and members of the public.

For information or contest rules, visit www.cityofwatsonville.org or contact Fontes at 768-3117.
