Two Hollister men were arrested Tuesday after a county worker saw them burglarizing a vehicle parked on San Andreas Road near Manresa Beach.

The worker, Mario Alvarez, said he was driving down San Andreas Road when he saw a suspect running from a vehicle, and then noticed the vehicle’s window was broken and the alarm was sounding.

Alvarez then followed the suspects in their vehicle, a white Honda Civic, as it drove south on San Andreas Road toward Watsonville, said Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael MacDonald.

The suspects sped up on Beach Road and lost Alvarez’s truck.

California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Franks saw the Civic, however, a few minutes later and followed it as it raced north on West Beach Street, then north on Lee Road.

The chase ended at the Chevron station at Lee Road and Riverside Drive, where one of the men went into the store.

As the other man was arrested, the one who went into the store came out with a handful of snacks he had purchased and was quickly placed in handcuffs.

Officers searching the Honda found items that had apparently been taken from the victim’s vehicle, MacDonald said.

Deputies searched along the route where the suspects drove and at two places where witnesses reported seeing them stop in hopes of locating other stolen items.
