APTOS — The Aptos High boys soccer team’s bid for a .500 SCCAL campaign will be decided later this week after a late goal by Scotts Valley pulled the teams to a 1-1 tie Monday night.

The tie left the Mariners at 4-5-2 in the league and 6-8-2 overall. With a win at San Lorenzo Valley on Wednesday, Aptos can clinch their first .500 league campaign since 2008.

For 70 minutes, the Mariners had the lead. But in the 78th minute, Scotts Valley got on the board. The Falcons got a breakaway from about 40 yards out and got a player toward the goal with a couple of Aptos defenders close behind. The Aptos goalkeeper came out to challenge, and several players collided. After the tire dust settled on the turf, the Aptos goalkeeper was called for a yellow card.

There was a debate as to whether the goalkeeper could stay in the game. He eventually came out as Scotts Valley was awarded a penalty kick.

James Marshall took the kick and went low to the right to tie the game.
