Shadowbrook's long-standing reputation as romantic destination grows

Posted: Monday, Feb 11th, 2013

CAPITOLA — Mike Moran and his wife Ellie, of Aptos, had their first date at Shadowbrook Restaurant in 1992, drawn there by its reputation as a romantic destination and the possibility of a cable car ride down a verdant hillside to the entrance.

“I wanted to spend my rest of my life with Ellie,” Moran said. "In Santa Cruz County, that is the place to do it."

The couple was married two years later, and has with few exceptions celebrated their anniversary there every year.

"We wouldn't go anywhere else," he said.

Set on a hillside overlooking Soquel Creek, the restaurant offers a cable car ride or walk down a verdant garden to the front door.

Co-owner Ted Burke said that the restaurant's theme — romance in dining — has stuck with the restaurant since it opened in 1949.
