WATSONVILLE — Citing the business as a drain on city resources, the Watsonville Planning Commission revoked El Miramar Sports Bar and Restaurant's alcohol permit Tuesday, despite the owner's insistence that he was following the rules.
The commission voted 4-2 in favor of the revocation, with commissioners Mireya Gomez-Contreras and Aurelio Gonzalez dissenting.
The revocation period was reduced to six months instead of a year, when owner Juan Yepez Garcia can reapply for an alcohol permit.
Even with the condensed period, Yepez Garcia said it was not acceptable.
"Whatever you decide, that's going to affect me," he said. "I'm going to close it up because it's not going to work for me."
The business, located on 522 Main St., came under scrutiny after two recent compliance checks, one on Dec. 14 and another on Jan. 5, revealed that the restaurant was serving alcohol to minors, lacked food service and effective security, and was operating as a nightclub without a permit, according to Suzi Aratin, senior planner.
