APTOS — Two Watsonville men were seriously injured Tuesday in a head-on collision in front of Aptos High School.

California Highway Patrol officer Sarah Jackson said Luis Corona, 21, of Watsonville was traveling eastbound on Freedom Boulevard, approaching Mariner Way in a 1997 Audi A4 at 6:30 a.m. with a male passenger. Jackson said Corona observed the traffic signal facing him turn red and, instead of stopping, he accelerated through the intersection. The Audi plowed into a 2002 Chevy Silverado pickup being driven by a 16-year-old female, a student at Aptos High. The student reportedly was making a left turn from a turning pocket on westbound Freedom Boulevard with a green light.

Corona and his passenger, Isaac Foncerca were trapped in the Audi until Aptos/La Selva firefighters could extricate them with the Jaws of Life. The Chevy driver suffered minor injuries.

Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage. Car parts were strewn over a wide swath of Freedom Boulevard and surrounding landscape. The collision also tore out a section of chain link fence and knocked over a streetlight.

Corona and Foncerca was taken by American Medical Response paramedics to Valley Medical Center in San Jose with major injuries.

Traffic was significantly affected for the morning commute and school pick up/drop off zone while emergency workers dealt with the crash and rescue.

Corona will be cited for not having his driver’s license with him and reckless driving (both misdemeanors).
