WATSONVILLE A Cadillac Escalade SUV slammed into a Mercedes C-5000 sedan Thursday afternoon on the northbound Highway 1 onramp at Holm Road, and despite major damage, all occupants of the cars appeared to be OK.

Mark Holmes of Aptos, the driver of the Mercedes, was standing next to his car a couple minutes after the accident and said he was fine, physically. He was wearing his seatbelt and his airbag deployed.

"I'm just bummed out," Holmes said. "I just bought the car six months ago."

When a reporter said the car is beautiful, Holmes answered, "it was."

He said the Cadillac slammed into his car as he was on Highway 1, passing Holm Road, even though he tried to swerve out of the way.

Watsonville Police, Watsonville Fire, the California Highway Patrol and an ambulance responded to the scene.

The female driver of the Cadillac SUV was sitting up in an ambulance and being worked on by paramedics about 10 minutes after the crash, which happened around 2 p.m. She was shaken up, but appeared to have no major injuries.

A young female who was in the passenger seat of the Cadillac was talking on her cellphone after the accident and did not want to answer questions.
