WATSONVILLE — The illness bug hit some members of the Santa Cruz High boys basketball team.

The players who withstood that bug also withstood St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High’s attempt at an upset.

Santa Cruz shot 50 percent from the court in the first half and went on to win 58-46 over the Sharks on Wednesday night.

The game was Santa Cruz’s first after losing a bid to get into first place in the SCCAL on Monday night. After a turnover-filled slow start, the Cardinals got on track with an 11-0 run that crossed into the second quarter.

Kiree Hutchings was the catalyst in the run, getting four points in the 11-point streak. He also raced to the hoop and leaped high but sent the ball to Jasper Lewin who finished a basket. Spencer Schwartz and Nico Christiansen also had buckets in the run.

From there, Santa Cruz made sure it didn’t let St. Francis get close.
