SANTA CRUZ — Spencer Schwartz got the basketball at midcourt, raced to the hoop ahead of his opponents and dunked it with one hand.

The crowd roared in approval as the Cardinals were on their way.

And then they weren’t on their way.

Soquel High’s boys basketball team bounced Santa Cruz 59-46 on Monday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League standings.

“This is a great win,” said Soquel’s Tucker Wiget. “We still have to work hard, and hopefully we can win league.”

Monday night’s contest was a game statisticians would have loved to eat up and analyze every which way. The Knights took far fewer attempts than Santa Cruz and were held to 32 possessions in the first quarter.

But when they had the ball on offense, they made it count.

Soquel shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, more than double that of Santa Cruz (27.5 percent). Santa Cruz was able to get more chances thanks to offensive rebounds, but the Knights kept turning them away and made gold of their rare opportunities.

It was very evident in the second quarter, when Soquel only shot the ball six times. Yet, they went 4 for 6 and still managed to take a double-digit lead — 31-19 — into the break.
