Land Trust of Santa Cruz County raises $13.5 million

Posted: Friday, Jan 25th, 2013

WATSONVILLE In the last 18 months, the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County raised $13.5 million to help preserve 10,000 acres, the organization announced Thursday.

A total of 1,300 donations were made, said Calah Pasley, outreach manager.

A celebration will be held at Watsonville Slough Farm on a yet-to-be-announced date.

Campaign funds have already been used to protect 9,900 acres including a 1,200-acre ranch purchased in December, the first major conservation project in the Pajaro Hills east of Watsonville.

The Land Trust also helped protect the 8,500-acre CEMEX Redwoods Forest north of Davenport, working with conservation partners in the Living Landscape Initiative.

Funds from the campaign also helped purchase an easement on a 75-acre apple orchard in the Pajaro Valley. The campaign has also protected 18 acres of rare Sandhills habitat and the Land Trust expects to protect an additional 58 acres of Sandhills habitat near Scotts Valley in the next year.
