WATSONVILLE—The era of the neighborhood video store continues to wane, and earlier this week, Dish Network Corp. announced it would be closing another 300 Blockbuster stores — out of 800 remaining in the United States — resulting in the layoff of approximately 3,000 workers.

The Blockbuster store on the 1700 block Freedom Boulevard is slated to close in April, according to company spokesperson Stephanie Kopet.

“We continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we will continue to analyze store-level profitability and — as we have in the past — close unprofitable stores,” Kopet wrote in an email. "Some of the approximately 300 stores are reaching the end of their lease, and others are closing based on overall performance.”
