WATSONVILLE — James Gomez got the upperhand on his brother Robert on Wednesday night, and the Wildcatz got the upperhand on the Grizzlies.

But both teams are even in the standings with six regular season games to go.

Watsonville High’s boys basketball team withstood a second-half charge by Pajaro Valley and won 71-65 to end a three-game losing streak.

The game was hyped up as a duel between the two Gomez brothers, who were coaching against each other in basketball for the first time. They had been on opposing ends in other sports, but basketball put them in a unique position.

“We kind of know what we’re both running since we talk a lot about games, so we had to adjust,” said Robert Gomez.

The game could have also been a battle between both Alex Chavez players, but it was Watsonville’s version who easily got the advantage in that comparison.

Chavez scored a game-high 23 points and powered Watsonville early in the third quarter to give the Wildcatz the lead and gain breathing room on the Grizzlies.

Nineteen of his 23 points came in the second half.

“Coming off the loss to North County, we really needed a win,” Chavez said.

Right out of the intermission, the Wildcatz got a stop and looked to Chavez, who hit a three-pointer to give Watsonville a 35-34 lead. It was the start of a 10-0 run that gave Watsonville the advantage for good.
