SEASIDE Sief Mahagoub of Monterey moved to the U.S. in 1999 after fleeing war-torn eastern Sudan.

He became a citizen, and after 9/11 joined the U.S. Army, explaining that he wanted to be a benefit to his newfound home.

I think every immigrant should take pride in this country, he said. Its our country, its our America and we have to fix it ourselves.

Mahagoub came to the annual Martin Luther King parade in Seaside Monday, along with thousands of other people.

Im from Africa, and I think Martin Luther King made it possible for people like me to be here, he said. He took all the beating for us, and I think hes be upset if didnt enjoy this day.

The celebration of the slain civil rights leader came on the same day as President Barack Obama was getting sworn in for his second term.

Participants from several different organizations, churches and schools held banners, held aloft signs and chanted as they marched along Broadway Avenue, which was unofficially named Obama Way in 2010.
