SANTA CRUZ Local groups and individuals rolled up their sleeves and helped tune up their communities Monday during the annual National Day of Service. From painting buildings and collecting clothing and warm blankets to raking leaves and felling trees, groups fanned pout around the county to make a mark.

In Watsonville volunteers chipped in at Loaves and Fishes, to help consolidated food and clothing for the needy and at their daily free lunch. Other volunteers helped the Homeless Census while others, many in local church groups helped tidy up Evergreen Cemetery in Santa Cruz.

Its good to help the community out, said Taylor OBrien, 10. Its fun and you get to help; Im happy to be able to help. Right now we are raking leaves and shoveling dirt to help clean up the cemetery.
