CASTROVILLE — Isaiah Garcia saw an opening and dribbled down the baseline. He squeaked by a Watsonville defender and hit a bank-shot layup to give the North Monterey County High boys basketball team a one-point lead.
And then, in something that would have rivaled the movie “Groundhog Day,” the game never seemed to end.
Watsonville got a chance to take the lead and North Monterey County got a stop.
North Monterey County had a chance to ice the game and couldn’t.
And then it happened again.
Then it happened a third time.
Garcia finally channeled his inner good-guy Phil Connors and finished off the game, making a layup and forcing a turnover as the Condors defeated Watsonville 61-59 on Friday night.
“I was tired of losing,” Garcia said. “We’ve played so many close games and last-second games. Tonight, we wanted it more.”
In what has been a very even Monterey Bay League Pacific Division, the Condors’ record improved to 2-3. With Pajaro Valley losing in double overtime to Alisal, the Condors are just 1 1/2 games out of second place in the division.
