CASTROVILLE — The Pajaro Valley High girls soccer team will finally get a home game Wednesday after spending all of December on the road.

The Grizzlies ended their road journey by defeating North Monterey County 3-2 on a soggy secondary field at the Castroville school.

Pajaro Valley coach Laura Diaz said she was pleased with how the team played, mentioning how they’ve improved from the past few weeks.

“The last to weeks, they’ve been working hard, and it’s showed,” Diaz said. “We’re growing as a team.”

Pajaro Valley, leading 2-1 after 40 minutes, controlled the ball for the majority of the second half, giving itself plenty of chances to score.

In the 45th minute, Irais Gonzalez split two defenders about 20 yards from the goal. She crept forward and kicked the ball to the goal, but the ball went right at goalkeeper Linda Delgado.

Two minutes later, Yuritzy Mondragon outran a North Monterey County defender about 30 yards away and went right at the goal, but her shot attempt went too high.

A minute after that, the Condors seemed to have Mondragon trapped near the right sideline about 30 yards away. She kicked the ball toward the center, where Valentina Avila headed it in, giving Pajaro Valley a 3-1 lead.
