WATSONVILLE — Watsonville High School Sophomore Mayra Munoz has a tough choice ahead of her — should she become a surgeon or a lawyer?

The all-around athlete — Munoz plays soccer, volleyball and softball — said she is “very competitive” and “likes to argue” so law may win out in the end. But what she knows definitively is at what university she would like to pursue her career dream: Harvard University.

Munoz and other ambitious and talented present and former students from the Pajaro Valley were on hand this weekend for a reunion of the Ivy League Project, a districtwide program that takes low-income, high-achieving students on a tour of top-ranked universities to familiarize them with the campus and its departments and programs.

The program is competitive. Candidates are hand-selected and must have a GPA of at least 3.7 and enrolled in at least one AP (Advanced Placement) class. The program targets students who would be the first in their families to go to a four-year university.

“Before this program, I didn’t know Tufts existed,” said Sandro Renteria-Garcia, a sophomore at Tufts University, studying chemical engineering.

The Watsonville High School graduate remembers the changing colors of the leaves when he toured the Massachusetts university during the autumn.
