WATSONVILLE — On Dec. 21, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture declared eradication of the European Grapevine Moth from Santa Cruz County.
A portion of the county (Aptos and the northern part of Watsonville), amounting to 87 square miles, was placed under quarantine in June of 2011 following the capture of two moths in a vineyard.
County Agricultural Commissioner Mary Lou Nicoletti said it was a small infestation – two moths found between late 2010 and late 2011 — and relatively easy to eradicate, but was “important everyone complied.”
