CASTROVILLE – The Santa Catalina High girls basketball team held off North Monterey County 43-29 Saturday night in the team’s first game of 2013.

The Cougars, playing their first game in 25 days, never trailed and held off every attempt the Condors made to get back into the contest.

North Monterey County held Santa Catalina to one field goal in the final quarter. But Santa Catalina’s aggressiveness in going to the hoop resulted in nine points from free throws.

The Condors, down 19-8 at the half, picked up the tempo to wear down Santa Catalina. They got to within five, 23-18, with 3:07 to go in the third quarter thanks in part to a six-point run with scoring by Samantha Flores, Demelza Perez and Julissa Torres.

Santa Catalina answered by allowing only one basket the rest of the quarter.

Torres and Angelica Moises each scored six points, and Flores scored five for North Monterey County.

Santa Catalina was led by Kylie Moses’ 15 points and Lucy Scattini’s eight points.
