WATSONVILLE — David Hightower noticed some of the spectators in the crowd on Friday night were not fans of Alisal or Monte Vista Christian high schools’ basketball teams; they were players and fans of other teams in the Monterey Bay League.

That only seemed to pump him and the rest of the Monte Vista Christian squad up.

The Mustangs showed why they’re one of the favorites to win the Pacific Division this year, rolling by Alisal 74-46 in the teams’ opener.

“We know some teams are watching us,” Hightower said. “We’re projected to win, so we had to come out and make a statement.”

Monte Vista Christian had the lead for all of the second half, and the squad really turned it on in the fourth quarter, going on a 14-2 run in the first four minutes to leave no doubt.

It was Hightower who sparked the run, scoring eight of the 14 points in the run. He got a steal with 7:18 to go in the quarter, led a 2-on-1 break and passed the ball to Nick Matiasevich, who laid it in.

But he was just getting started.

He then led another fast break and scored two more on a layup. He took a hard foul going to hoop and made two free throws. Then he capped off the run with 4:02 to go with a baseline drive that ended with a layup.

The Mustangs held a comfortable 27-point lead at that time.
