The apple of her parent's eye, Mary Jo was the only child born to Guy Dailey Stetzel and Agnes Cathrine Stetzel (née Sullivan), of Fargo, North Dakota. She excelled in academics, was an accomplished pianist and was honored to graduate from Purdue University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mary Jo earned her teaching credential in 1975 and later her Master's Degree from San Jose State University and dedicated her entire teaching career to H. A. Hyde Elementary.
After retiring in 1990 Mary Jo poured her energy into volunteering with a variety of faith and education based organizations: California Retired Teachers' Association; the Delta Kappa Gamma, Zeta Epsilon Chapter, at one time serving as president; the Goodwill Auxiliary in Santa Cruz; and the Electra Circle of the Santa Cruz Redwoods, Chapter #273 Order of the Eastern Star.
Mary Jo was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church and nurtured her spirituality through bible studies sponsored by the Santa Cruz Women's Connection.
