GILROY – The Wildcatz have a goal of winning the division. Thursday was a first step in their hopes of achieving that goal.
The Watsonville High girls basketball team never let Gilroy in the contest as they prevailed 44-21 in the teams’ Monterey Bay League Pacific Division opener.
After the teams traded baskets to start the game, it was all Watsonville. The Wildcatz went on a 9-0 run in the remaining 5:11 of the first quarter to take an 11-2 advantage. Sonya Cervantes scored six of the points in that run. The Wildcatz capped off the run with a give-and-go play from Mandy Cabanlit to Cervantes.
Brianna Cueva led Watsonville with 13 points, while Cervantes had nine points.
The win ended a two-game losing streak, as Watsonville improved to 7-6 overall.
It was also Watsonville’s first win to start league or divisional play since 2008, when it edged Seaside by one.
