Two women who allegedly escaped from a minimum security jail facility Monday were apprehended within minutes after a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy saw them saw them fleeing, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.

According to deputies, Melissa Bica, 19, and Domenika Galpren, 25, climbed a security fence and walked away from the Blaine Street Women’s Facility in Santa Cruz approximately 7:50 p.m.

A correctional officer saw them walk away, and the women were quickly apprehended about a mile and a half away at the 76 Gas Station at Ocean and Water streets.

Inmates housed at the Blaine Street facility are commonly serving time for charges related to theft, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and for narcotics violations.

Bica was arrested in August after police found her with property that had been allegedly stolen from vehicles in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara and counties. She was in custody as she waited to be placed in a treatment program. She was charged with drug possession, grand theft and receiving stolen property, deputies said.

Galpren was arrested in August and charged and sentenced for possession of a stolen vehicle and with committing a felony while on court release for separate auto theft charges.

Both women now face additional escape charges.

The women were transferred to Santa Cruz Main Jail, where they are being held on $25,000 bail.
