WATSONVILLE — Ada Neu woke up Christmas morning to a most unexpected surprise.

After her mother explained that the mysterious hoof prints near the barn on her Corralitos property came from the recent rainfall, Ada, 9, walked into the barn and saw Bella, her new, 13-year-old trakehner.

“I was very shocked,” she said. “When I came around the corner I almost fell over.”

Ada, who has been riding since she was 3, said she hopes one day to become a “great rider,” competing in jumping events.

To help her get there, Ada takes lessons at Golden Gaits Equestrian Center in Watsonville, which has been offering a full range of lessons for 12 years.

The center also offers horse care and training with an emphasis on preparing riders to compete in “A-rated” shows.

“It’s more of a competitive program,” Owner Kristine Schick said.
