WATSONVILLE—There is nothing Lulu likes better than to play fetch and have her tummy tickled.

The Chihuahua Boston Terrier mix is in ecstasy as she runs up and down the Watsonville animal shelter hallway chasing after a mangled tennis ball.

But, Lulu — who was taken to the shelter as a stray — was not always so jovial.

“Lulu was timid when she first came in but has come through in leaps and bounds,” said Cristina Beyer, animal health technician at the Watsonville shelter at 580 Airport Boulevard.

The 1-and-a-half-year-old, black-and-white dog is one of many animals — dogs, cats, rabbits, iguanas, geese, guinea pigs, hamsters, snakes, ducks, goats, cows — that the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter take in at their Santa Cruz and Watsonville locations.

The main Santa Cruz facility receives more of the larger and unusual animals. They currently have a flock of four geese and exotic birds, and since the county shelter is an open-door facility, no animals are turned away.

The Watsonville location is in need of more volunteers; if you would like to learn more about volunteering at the shelter, go to www.scanimalshelter.org/shelter_volunteer.
