WATSONVILLE — The Beach Street Cafe has been a Watsonville mainstay for more than eight decades.

Centered in an industrial area on West Beach Street and surrounded warehouses and produce companies, the cafe has been a rest stop and a breakfast nook for countless intercontinental truckers and for local workers on their lunch breaks.

The cafe closed last year after economic woes forced the owners to declare bankruptcy. Now, after five months of renovations, the new owners will open the doors to customers for the first time today from 6 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

“We’re going to turn on the lights and the open sign, and put the coffee on,” said new owner Flavia Ordoñez.

At today’s open house, customers will get a chance to see the new decor, meet the new owners and employees and order off the menu, which features “simple, home-cooked food,” as employee Tobi Hope-O’Brien explained.

Under the supervision of its former chef, the restaurant will offer classic breakfast and lunch dishes such as pancakes, waffles, eggs benedict and omelets. Burgers are also on the menu, as are club, BLT and grilled sandwiches.
