SALINAS – The Pleasant Valley High girls basketball team needed overtime to defeat St. Francis Central Coast Catholic 69-59 on Thursday night in the second round of the Sweet 16 Tournament at Alvarez High.

St. Francis trailed for the majority of the game, but thanks to a 6-0 run in the final minute, it suddenly had a 55-53 lead. Lauren Price scored all six points in the run. She got a pass from Sonja Shumake with 40 seconds to go and blew by a defender to tie the game at 53-53. After a miss by Pleasant Valley, the Sharks raced down the court looking to take the lead.

Amber Martinez dribbled at the left wing, and Price cut to the basket all alone. Martinez threw a perfect pass to Price, and Price finished the job, giving the Sharks a 55-53 lead with 15 seconds to go.

Pleasant Valley, following a time out, raced down the court, and a shot went wayward. Jessica Gallaway got the rebound with her back to the hoop. She did a quick spin and tossed the ball in to tie the game at 55-55 with two seconds to go.

Pleasant Valley didn’t trail in overtime, getting a layup right way by Izzy Bonacorsi.

The Vikings made seven consecutive free throws to keep St. Francis at bay.

Lauren Price scored 24 points to lead St. Francis, which plays Del Campo at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the third round of the tournament.

Aptos 71, Marina 28: Aptos opened up Day 2 of the Sweet 16 Tournament by rolling by Marina in a battle of Mariners.

Aptos allowed just two first-half points to Marina and took a 29-2 lead into intermission.

Blanca Otvos was the star of the third quarter, scoring Aptos’ first eight points of that quarter to help Aptos take a 37-13 lead with 4:05 to go in the quarter. She finished with 17 points.
