SALINAS — The first of three local basketball tournaments kicked off Wednesday as the annual Sweet 16 Holiday Tournament began at Alvarez High.

For three Santa Cruz County schools in the massive girls basketball tournament, the results were mixed. Soquel and St. Francis Central Coast Catholic posted big wins, while Aptos lost in the first round.

Soquel left no doubt it is a threat to win the competition, as it used a 21-point second quarter to roll by tournament host Alvarez 57-13.

The Knights made eight of their first 10 shots in the second quarter to get some space between them and the Eagles. They ended up shooting 10 for 17 in the quarter to take a 31-7 lead into the break.

Soquel got off to a slow start, but thanks to its defense, it didn’t allow Alvarez to stay with it.

The Knights allowed one Alvarez basket in 16 attempts. Although they didn’t fare that much better in the quarter — they missed 13 shots — they had a 10-2 lead after eight minutes of play. Soquel started the second quarter with two fast-break layups, and they started picking up steam on the scoreboard.
