WATSONVILLE — Organizers of nonprofit organizations across the county reported that holiday donations were down this year, but last-minute gifts helped many reach their goals.

This included a $2,000 donation and several $10,000 and $5,000 donations.

Watsonville Salvation Army Capt. Robert Viquez said the faltering economy also had his organization worried as donations dried up and more than 1,000 children hoped for Christmas toys that were not materializing.

But thanks to last-minute donations, including two checks for $2,000 and $10,000, the families received both food and toys, Viquez said.

“It was really difficult this year, but thanks to the kindness of the people and companies in Watsonville we made it possible,” he said. “We hope next year we can have more people to help. Many families are in severe circumstances. I think it will be better.”

More than 200 families received boxes of food, much of which was purchased with the money collected through the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle program.
