SAN JOSE – The Palo Alto High boys basketball team scored the first 10 points of the game and rolled to a 57-35 victory over Soquel on Saturday in the White Division finals of the D.J. Frandsen Memorial Tournament at Bellarmine High.
Palo Alto’s defense hampered Soquel all night. The Vikings allowed just three shot attempts to Soquel in the first four minutes of the game. Soquel shot 30.4 percent from the court in the first half.
However, Soquel went into intermission only trailing 27-21.
The first four minutes of the second half started out similar to the first four minutes of the first half, as Palo Alto went on an 8-0 run to break the game open.
Cody Valcarcel finished with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting to lead Soquel, while Scott Akrop scored 11 points.
Palo Alto’s Aubrey Dawkins scored 19 points and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
Akrop received the Spirit of D.J. Award, given to the player who displays the most hustle throughout the tournament. Akrop is the cousin of D.J. Frandsen, a Bellarmine grad who died after complications from a form of kidney cancer and of whom the award is named after.
