PAJARO — The chilly winds and cold rain that intermittently fell throughout the day were not a deterrent to hundreds of families who came to Casa de la Cultura in Pajaro Friday for the organization’s annual Casa de la Cultura Food and Gift Christmas Giveaway.

Nearly 440 children who live in Pajaro and Las Lomas signed up to get a Christmas toy, which also qualified their families for packages of food to help them cook a meal for the holiday.

Isela Ramirez came with her two boys, 8 and 4. She said the giveaway helps her provide them a bit more than she can afford for them.

“This always helps,” she said.

Mariela Onofre of Pajaro, who attended the event with her four children, said the event makes a big difference in her holiday.

“I feel we got some very important things that will be so helpful, especially for my kids,” she said. “These are the things we need. One of my kids even got a nice sweater. We’re very thankful.”

The families began lining up at 7:30 a.m., forming a line of several hundred people as they waited to get their goodies and for a chance to see Santa.
