WATSONVILLE A Watsonville man suspected of being involved in a street race Sunday night that ended in the death of a 17-year old man was arrested after police found a loaded handgun in his vehicle, Watsonville Police Lt. Mike Ridgway said Wednesday.

Details are still emerging in the investigation, but police suspect that Alejandro Miguel Camacho, 18, was racing along Green Valley Road approximately 8:46 p.m. Sunday with a white 1998 Honda Civic when the Civic lost control, rolled and smashed into a tree.

Juan Jeronimo, who was siting in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected and died at the scene.

Camacho appeared in court Wednesday morning, where he pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter, street racing, active participation in a criminal street gang, being a convict in possession of a firearm and possession of marijuana, according to Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Jason Gill.

The driver of the Honda could also face charges in the case, Ridgway said.
