WATSONVILLE — Although efforts to gather, sort and send off thousands of toys to needy children are just beginning to ramp up now, a small band of volunteers typically begin much earlier.

One of those volunteers this year was 6-year-old Bella, a Live Oak girl whose September birthday party was a chance for her to ask her guests to bring a toy to donate in lieu of gifts.

Still, with donations slower than average this year, Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots of Santa Cruz County Program Coordinator Delilah Valadez is hoping that residents will begin to bring enough toys and fill the barrels scattered around the county before the Dec. 17 deadline.

“Do I think this really can be done?” she asked. “Yes, of course I do. You see, I was once that mother – alone and isolated, with little hope to offer my young son. My future was changed by the kindness of someone I had never met. That someone this year could be you.”
