Lavon Carl Blanke

Posted: Friday, Dec 7th, 2012

June 30, 1943 – November 29, 2012

Carl Blanke lost his six-month battle with Leukemia on November 29, 2012, passing in his Watsonville home with his loved ones surrounding him.

Carl worked as a commercial real estate broker with Hirsch and Associates of Santa Cruz for the past 20 years, primarily serving South County. Everyone involved in business transactions with him noticed his meticulous attention to detail and his dedication to providing the best terms and outcomes for his clients. He was impatient with anything less than near perfection, and demanded no less from himself.

Carl exhibited his strong work ethic in volunteer work as well as in business. From the late-80s through the mid-90s he volunteered with the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, including serving a term as president, and was very focused on economic development. With his leadership, the Chamber worked itself out of a deficit and into a positive financial position. He also served for several years on the finance committee of the Watsonville Fly-In. Carl was consistently supportive of events that brought the local community together with the business community underthe common goal of philanthropy. He often answered the call to secure auction items and door prizes for these events and was extremely generous with his own financial support.

Those who were fortunate to call Carl a friend could not find a truer one. If called on in a crisis, he would be there in an instant and without fanfare. He was the kind of friend who cared enough to tell the honest truth when people needed to hear it. His keen intelligence and quick, dry sense of humor provided delightful entertainment. The younger generation particularly loved his mastery of random humor.

Carl’s passion for his family was as large as his personality. He loved making up games for his grandchildren, which earned him the nickname “Silly Grandpa” –a name he embraced as tightly as his love for his family. He attended every school performance and many of his grandchildren’s games. His family has lost a man who was their father, grandfather, friend, partner, mentor and “Silly Grandpa.” Carl will be greatly missed, and always remembered and loved.

Carl is survived by his brother Bob, of Scio, Ohio; sons Eric (Jennifer) and Darren (Brenna) and five grandchildren: David, Tyler, Zoe, Matthew and Kali, all of Santa Cruz County; his former wife Sandy Blankeand long-term partner, Marty Ackerman. At his request, no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, friends may choose to make a donation to either the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (lls.org) or Hospice of Santa Cruz County (hospicesantacruz.org).
