WATSONVILLE — Eric "Ghambit" Muñoz wants more hip-hop artists to have a positive impact on their communities.

"I wish there were more people who give back to their community, especially artists," he said.

Taking the initiative, Muñoz, a Watsonville hip-hop artist in collaboration with the GHWR Youth Center, organized "Hip-Hop For Hope 2," an annual food and toy drive that will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 215 East Beach St. in Watsonville.

Muñoz will be joined by 14 other hip-hop artists, including Santa Cruz's Chris Rene of "X-Factor" fame and popular Latin artist Cambio. The hip-hop artists are not only local, but they are also prominent in the scene as well, Muñoz said.

The event has quickly grown since its inauguration last year: The drive moved from the Youth Center to the larger Veterans Memorial Hall.

Last year, the event raised 1,200 meals, about 1,000 pounds of canned food and around 100 toys, Muñoz said.

Despite the impressive numbers, Muñoz has loftier ambitions for this year.
