CASTROVILLE — Daniel Valle has tried to convince his friends that this year’s Condor basketball squad is different.

Maybe an undefeated first six days will finally do the trick.

The North Monterey County High boys basketball team improved to 3-0 on Wednesday night, beating Gonzales 74-47.

The Condors not only completed a perfect three-game homestand to start the season, but they also accomplished their first 3-0 start since the 2003-04 season. That season ended with a league championship.

After two really bad seasons — one was winless and the other had just six victories — the Condor players and coach Duncan Edwards are all happy things have gotten off on a different foot this year.

“Our team is looking good,” said Valle, who had 16 points on 6-for-20 shooting. “We keep improving, and we’re doing anything to be successful.”

The defense was the catalyst Wednesday night, as North Monterey County pressured the seven-man roster Gonzales brought to Castroville.

Such was the case at the start of the third quarter. For the first 1:23 of the third quarter, the ball was on only one half of the court. North Monterey County scored six points in that 1:23 to take a 48-25 advantage.

Gonzales finally got the ball across the timeline but soon turned it over North Monterey County.

The Condors eventually put together a 16-0 run to break the game open. A Jose Garcia runner with 2:40 to play in the third quarter put North Monterey County ahead 58-25.

“We’re going to play fast and press and we’ll see what happens,” Edwards said.
