WATSONVILLE — The proposed annexation of farmland into Watsonville city limits came one step closer to a vote on Tuesday when the Watsonville city clerk certified that enough signatures had been gathered to put the proposal in front of voters in either a special election in 2013 or during the general election in November 2014.
The farmland, referred to as the Sakata-Kett property, consists of approximately 80 acres and is located east of Highway 1 between West Beach Street and Riverside Drive and is currently on lease to strawberry growers.
Petitioners had to reach a goal of 1,504 signatures — 10 percent of registered voters in Watsonville — to qualify the proposal for the ballot.
City Clerk Beatriz Flores, will present the report at next week’s City Council meeting on Dec. 11.
