WATSONVILLE ó A $2.5 million grant has put the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County closer to acquiring the Star Creek Ranch, a 1,200-acre property in the hills east of Watsonville that boasts a redwood forest and six creeks and provides habitat for wildlife and a spawning area for Steelhead.

The acquisition will be the first major one in the Pajaro Hills, said Land Trust deputy director Stephen Slade.

The purchase was made possible by a $2.5 million grant by the California Wildlife Conservation Board, nearly $1.5 million from the land trust and a handful of grants.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

ďAll thatís left is paperwork,Ē Slade said. ďIt assures that the property will always remain wild.Ē
