WATSONVILLE — The Monte Vista Christian High girls basketball team started off its 2012-13 campaign in a big way, defeating Aptos 63-22 on Thursday night at home.

Monte Vista Christian, which returns a majority of its starters from a season ago, pressured the visiting Mariners all night with defense. It never trailed as it won its fourth consecutive opener.

In building an 18-8 first-quarter lead, the Mustangs shot 8 for 21 from the field. Myckenzie Toler had 10 points in that quarter.

Aptos was limited to just 3 for 13 shooting in the quarter. It did get a three-pointer from Amanda Ang with 38 seconds to go in the quarter. A minute earlier, Blanca Otvos got an offensive rebound and scored to end a near four-minute drought.

Ang finished with seven points. Karianna Crowder and Kendal Bivans each had four points for Aptos (0-1).

The Mustangs were led by Toler, whose 17 points all came in the first half. Center Sydney Beadle had 10 points, and Donatella Macleaod had six points.

Thursday’s game was the debut of new Aptos head coach Ralph Howe, who was previously the junior varsity coach.
